Steps to Change the Dell Asset tag on your Dell PC

SLN70985_en_US__1icon Note: Dell Command | Configure is a packaged software offering that provides configuration capability to business client platforms. This product consists of a Command Line Interface (CLI) and Graphical User Interface (GUI) to configure various BIOS features.

These instructions will assist you in using Command | Configure to set the asset tag information in the BIOS with Windows and certain Linux installations:

  1. Refer to the Dell Support Site to download Command | Configure from the Command suite. This can be found under the Systems Management category of the Drivers & Downloads site.
  2. Install command | Configure on the system that needs to have the BIOS asset tag changed:
    1. Follow the instructions on the support site to install the software.
  3. Go to the Create Local System Package tab on the GUI.
  4. Click System Summary.
  5. Click the Value to set field and type in the required asset tag.
  6. Click the Export.exe button at the bottom of the screen.
  7. Save it to your desired folder.
  8. Run the saved file and then shut down your PC normally.
  9. Check the BIOS to make sure the Asset Tag is correct.

CCTK consists of command-line utilities for supported business client operating systems. It helps configure and query BIOS settings on the systems. CCTK can also be used in a Microsoft® Windows® Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE).

These instructions will assist you in using CCTK to set the asset tag information in the BIOS with Windows:

  1. Refer to the Dell Support Site to download CCTK. This can be found under the Systems Management category of the Drivers & Downloads site.
  2. Install CCTK on the system that needs to have the BIOS asset tag changed:
    1. Navigate to the C:\dell\drivers\ folder you created.
    2. Double-click the cctk.msi program to open the installer.
    3. Navigate through the InstallShield Wizard to install the program.
  3. Open the Command Prompt window in your Windows operating system:
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. In the search box, type cmd.
    3. In the list of results, right-click on cmd and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Use the DOS command of cd\, change the directory to the root directory (typically C:\).
  5. At the C:\ prompt, use the dos command of cd to change the directory to the proper cctk directory:
    1. For Windows 32-bit, the full command would be cd program files\dell\cctk\x86.
    2. For Windows 64-bit, the full command would be cd program files\dell\cctk\x86_64.
  6. From the proper cctk directory, use the dos command of dir to verify that the program of cctk.exe is in the directory.
  7. From the proper cctk directory, use the --asset command to set the customer programmable BIOS asset tag:
    1. For example, to change the asset tag to Computer1 the full command would be cctk --asset=Computer1.
    2. Wait for the command to process. You will be either brought back to the cctk directory if successful. Or you may receive an error message if not successful.
  8. Use this Dell Client Configuration Toolkit Guide to assist with diagnosing any error codes or messages if necessary.
  9. Check the BIOS to make sure the Asset Tag is correct.
