The Dragino LGT-92 GPS Tracker is a litte gps tracker circuit board wich you can use to connect to a LoraWAN network to track people or assets. As said it comes in a bare circuit board and is not usable as a device wich you can easily take with you. For that reason I decided to design a 3D case and print it with my 3D printer.

The tracker comes with a battery holder for two AA batteries. Unfortunately the board shuts down the gps chip when the voltage gets under 2.8V. Most AA batteries provide 1.5 volt. With the 3 Volts provided by the two batteries the tracker doesn’t last for long.

Added components

I had a couple of 50x20x5 mm LiPo batteries laying around. These can be used to provide 4.2 Volts wich are enough to run the device for a couple of days if the LoraWAN signal is strong enough. You can buy some cheap usb charger boards online wich you can connect to a lipo battery. I added a small power button to switch the device on or off.

Designing the case

Then I used Fusion360 from Autodesk to design a case. Fusion 360 is an easy to use program for making 3D designs. You can use it for free for personal uses or if you have a startup. Click here to download Fusion 360.The case is designed for using without screws. If you order the parts from the list below, everything fits precisely.

You can download the 3d .stl files for printing on thingiverse.

Printing Material

The first case I printed in PLA but after one day taking it with me at the dashboard of the car it was totally malformed by the heat of the sun. The best material to print it in is PETG. Polyethylene terephthalate with Glycol (PETG) is the most commonly used plastic in the world. You can find the polymer almost everywhere you look, from your water bottle to clothing fibers, even in your food containers. PET is also used in thermoforming processes and can be combined with glass fiber to create engineering resins. Basically, thousands of consumer products, foods, and beverages are delivered and packaged within this material. Unfortunately, it‘s even floating in our oceans. These properties make it very usable for outside use.

Putting it all together

Just solder the battery to the lipo board. Cut the ground cable in half and solder both ends to the switch. Solder the plus and ground to the gps board. Press the switch between the outher wall and the inner stand. Screw the antenna in and put the Dragino GPS board on top. Close the case and you’re done.
